John Piper on Reading Theology

Found this excerpt on DesiringGod.org yesterday:

Since wisdom is found in the Word of God, we must apply ourselves in study and meditation to know the Word and do it. “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.” (Psalm 19:7). Therefore, we must devote ourselves to know and understand the testimonies of the Lord. And here I commend not only faithful Bible study, but also regular reading of great books on theology and biblical interpretation, books that distill the wisdom of the greatest students of the word over the past 1900 years.

Now, I know what you are thinking: I don’t have the time or the ability to get anywhere in books like that. So I want to show you something really encouraging.

  1. Hi Lex,

What are your favorite theological books that you’ve read??

  2. What the Bible Teaches by R.A. Torrey. You can read an older HTML on the web, or download a PDF for free. Whitaker House released an updated version in 1996 that has more notes and commments than what is out of copyright. It’s a fantastic volume.

  3. I’m a big fan of piper, other then being a Calvinist I love his humility and his great pastoral character. Each week answering questions that his church ask and post many on YouTube. I’m going to have to check out the theologian you suggested lex, and have you read Wright?

    1. N.T. Wright? I’ve read some stuff online, and watched a really great teaching on Acts via YouTube. I don’t have anything of his though, no. Where would you recommend I start with him?

  4. Depends on what your looking for. Basic Christianity I would say simply Christian, view on rapture or Christ return surprised by hope. Deeper topics justification, Christian origins and the questions of God all three volumes. Evil and the justice of God is good and thought provoking. His two new books are the next on my list but I’ve heard amazing things. Lastly any of his Pauline commenaries, they are all good.
