41. On what did Jesus ride into Jerusalem? Matt 2:5-7 vs Mk 11:7, Lk 19:35 vs John 12:14

This is either a serious condemnation of our public school system, or proof, again, that no one expected you to actually read this poster.

Matthew 21:5-7
“Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”6 So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them.

Mark 11:7
And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him.

Luke 19:35
Then they brought him to Jesus. And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus on him.

John 12:14
Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:

… Exactly

But we’ll do it anyway. I’ll do my best not to get sarcastic, but I make no guarantees.

From Merriam-Webster (a highly-regarded, and well-recognized dictionary):

COLT:
a : foal; especially: a male foal
b : a young male horse that is usually not castrated and has not attained an arbitrarily designated age (as four years)

FOAL:
a young animal of the horse family; especially : one under one year

A “young donkey” and a “colt” are the same thing.

It made be said that Matthew talks about two animals, a donkey and a colt, but surely we can all agree that a literal, modernized reading of that is a bit ridiculous. If you really believe that Matthew is suggesting Jesus rode two animals, simultaneously, I don’t know that anything I say will help you.

The Greek word for “them,” both times, in Matthew 7 is “auton” (Strong’s Ref #846). It is translated, “self; he, she, it; the same,” and is used to express the English, “he,” “she,” “it,” “they,” and “same.” Matthew does not mention the “colt” as an additional animal, but as an additional adjective, per the Old Testament prophecy he had just quoted.
