Breath-taking. Stunning. Insightful. I’m not sure I have the words to describe this book, and if it’s true that a picture is worth a thousand words I’m not sure you’d want to read all of the words that are due In the Footsteps of Paul.

Renown photographer, Ken Duncan, clings to scripture to help him re-trace Paul’s three missionary journeys, and his final trip to Rome. His images dominate the pages of the book, accompanied only by brief captions, scripture, provoking quotes from Christian scholars and authors, and the occasional paragraph of explanation or prose.

Duncan’s images bring the story of Paul’s work to life. If you had asked me a month ago, I wouldn’t even have been able to tell you that Paul made three missionary journeys and a final trip to Rome. Duncan’s work will take you along the roads that Paul walked, through the gates that welcomed him into different cities, past the grounds where he would have been beaten for his witness, to homes that he would have ministered in, and past scene after scene of ancient ruins that dare you to image what Paul’s world might have looked like.

The collection of images, quotes, and scripture will open a world of beautiful scenery, provoking monuments, and faith for the great exploits that God wants to work through you. It took me about a week to digest all of the content Duncan offers in In the Footsteps of Paul, and I’ve rarely been so encouraged, refreshed, and inspired by such a seemingly simple piece of work.
